LONGPIG2 Released!
I've been working on LONGPIG2 (the sequel to LONGPIG) since 2018, posting new comics on a Twitter account. Now in 2021, I'm finally done with it, and I've compiled it all on one page, with "dates", more color panels, coherent layout and other small improvements. It's meant to be read all at once, especially the later comics, so this is recommended over reading through the reverse-chronological twitter archives. Keep an eye on the twitter though, because LONGPIG3 (the final LONGPIG?) is coming there soon, bit by bit! Reading the original LONGPIG or the LONGPIG2 twitter is not necessary to read this project, but reading the original certainly won't hurt, as many of the panels and themes have been brought over from it.
If you're not familiar with any other incarnation of LONGPIG, the idea behind the comics is that they're constructed entirely out panels I've borrowed/stolen/sampled from other comics. For the most part these are from comics I've read a significant part of (usually all) but there are some exceptions. Knowing the original context of panels is not necessary when reading, but it can sometimes enrich the experience. The samples are uncredited, but if you have any questions about the source of a specific panel (or any other questions/comments) shoot me a comment on the itch project page, my personal twitter, or my email (tymoguin@gmail.com).
The comics I construct are meant to be non-narrative, but they are for the most part meant to be read as comics, though some do flirt more with being based more around layout. Repeating panels and themes are what make the comics coherent (at least in my opinion), and the panels that recur accumulate meanings/associations with uses in different contexts.
With both LONGPIG and LONGPIG 2 I've included a list of rules according to which you can put together your own LONGPIG, though the two lists are somewhat different. As far as I know I'm the only one who has put together a LONGPIG, but I would be over the moon if anyone else was interested enough to make their own. If you do, please drop me a line and I will link to your LONGPIG on the project page and promote it on my twitter. The most time-consuming part of LONGPIG construction is accumulating panels, so feel free to use the ones I've collected to begin with if that makes it less daunting. I obviously don't own any of the panels myself, but I have released both LONGPIG and LONGPIG2 as fully as possible into the public domain. So you can use my code, design, any elements I've made myself, and of course you have as much right to steal any of the panels I've stolen as I do (it should fall under Fair Use, but use your best judgement, I am not in a position to give legal advice.) Anyway, I'll reprint the latest version of the LONGPIG rules here:
- Construct your Longpig entirely out of stolen things.
- Steal panels for your Longpig from many different victims.
- Reuse the same panels in your Longpig over and over again.
- Build your Longpig by grouping panels that belong together.
- Your Longpig must be at least as tall as you are.
I hope you enjoy reading LONGPIG2! (And maybe even making your own!)
